FACT CHECK: No, Jashodaben did not protest at Shaheen Bagh against CAA-NRC

Summary

In our investigation, we found out that an old picture from February 2016 is being shared with a false claim that Jashodaben joined the protest at Shaheen Bagh against CAA-NRC.

In the backdrop of Anti-CAA NRC protest, a picture started doing rounds on social media with a claim that the estranged wife of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jashodaben took part in Shaheen Bagh protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. 

A twitter user named Zoya in an attempt to mock PM Modi shared the picture along with a sarcastic caption.

At the time of writing this article, the tweet received more than 350 retweets. 

The same picture was also widely shared on Facebook with the same caption. 

 

Jashodaben Modi is a retired primary school teacher. The image shows Jashodaben sitting with a group of women in what looks like a protest and is claimed to be Shaheen Bagh protests against the CAA, NRC, and NPR that has been going on since December 15th, 2019. 

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. With the help of a reverse image search, we found a news report by Deccan Chronicle where the same image was used. According to the report published on 13th February 2016, Jashodaben sat on fast for orphans, slum dwellers in support of a social cause.

The same event was also covered by The Hindu

In conclusion, an old picture from February 2016 is being shared with a false claim that Jashodaben joined the protest at Shaheen Bagh against CAA-NRC.
